8 Tehskeen is no More

Published by Dweezledap on 2010/1/12 (597 reads)

It would appear that TehSkeen is no more. For those who have been in the emulation scene for any decent amount of time this website needs no introduction.

Tehskeen forums was a huge deposit of emulators and Homebrew (primarily for the Wii and Gamecube). It was also an invaluable resource of information as well as a gathering place for many.

Dear Skeeners,

Due to circumstances out of my control I have no choice, but to inform you of the bad news. TehSkeen is lost. Therefore, due to internal and external reasons I am leaving the "scene". It.s been a hell of a ride and five years is a long time to work on something you enjoy to have it just vanish. TehSkeen had a vision and I hope someday someone else will follow this vision. I.m not giving up just moving on. I hope you all can understand this and if you can't I'm sorry. There are other sites out there with similar morals and content that you can be a part of. Farewell.

Kind Regards,

Brakken

After a good amount of time without a proper website and what seemed a huge lack of activity (except for continuous wip releases from tosec iso part and some backstage work in non iso part), which led the project to some kind of zombie mode for the last 2 years, we have the pleasure to announce that this is the new official website where all things about the project can and will be found.

Piracy!

It is a big word in today's gaming industry.

I grew up at the dawn of gaming. I remember at the age of 14 working the sumer of “82” shoveling horse shit and bailing hay just so I could buy an Atari for $150. In those days the the console came with 2 controllers and a Space Invaders cartridge. The average cost of an Atari game was around $20 - $50. I spent another $200 on a few games, the most expensive being EarthWorld at around $50! It was a very challenging game that at first glance offered $150,000 to the person that completed it. After purchasing I realized you needed to buy another 3 games at the same cost and submit game entries with codes that you received upon completion of certain levels. In conclusion I would have had to spend $200 (about $450 in todays world) play and find these codes, and then hope I was one of the lucky winners.
I had a friend that could get me pirated copies of these games for only $20. I payed for them just to find they where Identical to the real games (impossible to complete) and did not last more than a couple months before they did not load anymore. This alleviates the question “is piracy new”.
Why didn't I buy the cartridges?
I was being charged twice as much as usual.
Did I buy retail cartridges?
Many, and I still have them today.
Would I have bought pirated copies if the price was reasonable: No!

I am now much older and have eight children. I have bought nearly every gaming system know to man and many, many games for those systems. I still have an Atari 2600, 5200, 7600, ColecoVision, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo, Sega Saturn, 3DO, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Wonderswan, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS Lite, and PSP (phat). I have spent and estimated $20,000 on game discs, cartridges, and down-loadable software.

In this day and age anyone with the knowhow using cards, modified firmware, modchips, or cracks can “illegally” play games on any given console or PC.
My question is why?
Are these people looking for something for nothing? (Some)
Are these people looking at a way to test games before they fork out cash? (my opinion is most).
As stated earlier I have spent a good chunk of my lifetime earnings on games, I have put at least one Sony/Nintendo CEO's child through college (and three of my own). Is it Piracy if I want to “test” their games before I buy them??
I THINK NOT!

Software developers try to blame piracy for their dwindling sales and profits. I say make better games at more reasonable prices to the consumer. We no longer live in an age where gaming is new. What I payed for a game in 1982 should not be what we pay for a game in a market where there are 2 major (and many minor) hand held systems and three major console systems. Competition is steep and let's face it: Most games on the market today are just remakes of games we have played over and over and over again. A new game with a fresh idea is worth $50 or more … the rest are just graphically upgraded renditions of older games worth no more that $10 (at most).

Personal Note: I still buy games for my kids and myself ... but only after they/me try them and are playing them 24 hours later. I feel this is a fair “testing”. If you can not hold our/my interest for at least that long … you don't deserve my hard earned cash!

I’ve always been the type of person who measures the value of his car by what it gives back. My hardy 95 Saturn SL2 has nearly 200,000 miles on it and has been my baby for nearly 2 ½ years. Since I drive the car nearly 40,000 miles a year the front suspension is completely worn and needs replaced.  The lowest estimate I received was over $1500. This is kind of funny because I only paid $1500 for the car.

I've always been a do it yourself kind of guy and knew I could bring this car back to life at a much lower cost. I did not buy just replacement parts but upgraded the suspension and added a few “extras”. I was able to buy Moog, KYB, and other top of the line parts on Amazon for only $600. (We are talking Hi-Performance rotors, struts, strut mounts, springs, control arms, tie rod ends, and bushings.)

To make a long story short … I get my parts, requested a weekend off from my 2 jobs, and proceed to replace the suspension.

What happens? The driver’s side goes like a dream, 2 hours and I am done. The passenger’s side…I just have one question ... why does Murphy’s Law always come into play!

Here is my problem... A Bolt... just a simple bolt … will not come out. I have to buy nearly $100 in tools (Lowe’s, Sears, Wal-Mart) to remove this bolt and it has taken 4 hours of drilling, cutting, and pounding to get the damn thing out. Now I still have to find a replacement bolt from the dealership, or buy it from a junk yard.

Sounds simple right?

Now call me stupid but. ..

All 5 junkyards and both Saturn parts departments in this area are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Of course, the internet never sleeps and I can order this $6.32 (dealership price) part and have it overnighted for Monday at only $35. Let us not leave out the one site that could give me the part at noon Sunday for $150. Would you pay that for a $6.32 part?!

Let me explain the economy where I live:
Unemployment is near, this is not a mistype, 30%.
From a business standpoint would you think that junkyards and dealerships are intelligently choosing their audience?
Duh. Don’t these people realize that persons like me are more likely to by parts on the weekend!?

DEE DE DEE

I have a friend who recently went back to school and received two copies of Vista Ultimate. Only having one computer he was kind enough to give me the second upgrade. After debating for the past few weeks I finally made the plunge. All in all I am not too impressed. I have already had 3 BSODs (Blue Screens of Death) and my old HP printer and scanner are now all but useless. On the upside I can say in-game graphics on newer games are a bt better and several programs seem to be more responsive.

With the benefits of upgrading being minimal, and the loss of my trusty peripherals, I would advise anyone still running XP to keep it. It would be cheaper to wait till you buy your next computer. If I had paid the $199 for this upgrade I would have been very disappointed.
